Twenty-Seven

Nate

“You know that’s not how you hang lights,” I scolded and pointed to the spot where they were hanging lower than the rest. “Get the ladder and have Capshaw help you fix it.”

Jones nodded and took off to get the ladder. I walked around and checked out the rest of the lights, making sure they were correctly hung. How would it look if the fire department was responsible for creating a safety hazard?

Everything else looked great, and the place was really coming together. It was already Thursday afternoon, and I was dragging today. I regretted not making it to Rockin’ Rooster before we got to the community center this morning, but we didn't have time thanks to Jones almost catching the kitchen on fire.

My head was pounding, so I went in search of a vending machine when I rounded the corner and ran into Jane.

“Hey,” I said, pulling out my wallet while I waited for her to make her selection. “What are you doing here?”

“I came by to help the kids with the decorations. Mike and Sally are outside painting ornaments for the giving tree.” She bent down, grabbed the diet soda bottle, and stepped to the side. “Are you guys here helping out too?”

I nodded and stuck my dollar into the machine, then entered the code for a bottle of water.

“Yeah, they just finished getting the lights up. I need to find Caroline and see if she’s ready for us to help with taping off the spots for the vendor booths.”

“Sounds fun,” she laughed, taking a drink and then putting the cap back on.

“I think I’d rather trade and help the kids paint,” I joked. “At least I can trust them not to catch anything on fire.”

Capshaw came around the corner, and his eyes lit up when he saw Jane.

“Hey, Doc, how’s it going.”

“Capshaw.”

“Are you ever going to give me the opportunity to thaw that heart of yours so you’ll give me a chance?”

Her brows rose then her eyes narrowed.

“It’s not my heart that’s frozen, Capshaw. It’s that I’m too smart to trust that a man like you wants something more than just sex. And honestly, I’m just not interested in a casual relationship, nor do I want someone I have to babysit. I got divorced for a reason. Trust me when I say that I’m good.”

I covered my mouth with my hand to hide the laughter that bubbled up from behind it.

“See you next week,” she said with a warm smile before turning and walking away.

Once she was gone, he turned to me with a look of complete defeat on his face.

“Why is she always so mean to me?”

“Because you come at her like a horny fifteen-year-old, and she’s forty-one. She’s over the games and cheesy pick-up lines. Maybe act like yourself, and she’ll come around.”

“Do you really think I have a chance?” he asked with hope in his voice.

“Nope,” I said, letting the p pop. I clapped a hand on his shoulder and went back to check on the rest of the guys.
